The second-ranked Washington University women’s volleyball team took home the University Athletic Association (UAA) championship on Sunday, defeating host New York University 3-0 (30-16, 30-25, 30-27).

The Bears had a considerably easier time against New York than they did against Emory University in the semi-final match. After going up two games to none, the Bears conceded two consecutive games to Emory before eventually winning by a score of 3-2 (30-12, 30-17, 18-30, 24-30, 15-11).

After turning in strong performances, senior Katie Quinn and junior Colleen Winter received first team all-UAA honors. In the championship match, Quinn posted three kills, two assists and two blocks. Winter had nine kills, eight assists and twelve digs.

In addition to the Bears’ two first team representatives, four team members were named to the all-UAA second team. This included seniors Amy Brand and Cindy McPeak, as well as sophomores Kara Liefer and Heidi Pheiffer. Against New York, Brand led the team with ten kills, while Liefer recorded 77 assists.

In the earlier rounds of the UAA Championship on Saturday the Bears swept the competition, going 3-0 against Chicago, Rochester and Carnegie Mellon. The team’s five straight victories improve their UAA championship record to 74-1 all-time.

With their regular season over, Bears will next return to action in the NCAA Tournament, their opponent still to be determined.
