Fowler-Finn ignites Bears offense
Going into this past Saturday’s match-up against William Woods College, Bears’ midfielder Meghan Marie Fowler-Finn couldn’t have asked for a more successful freshman campaign. Leading the team in points with seven goals and two assists, Fowler-Finn not only started a full-fledged assault on the school record books, but also established herself as the team’s primary offensive weapon.
Not wanting to disappoint, Fowler-Finn made it business as usual against William Woods as she netted three goals on three shots on goal, giving her ten tallies on the season. Also scoring in the 7-0 rout were senior Kim Raess, sophomore Megan Morley, freshman Jenny Southworth, and junior Stephanie Ackerman. The goal was Raess’ fourth of the year, moving her into third on the team in scoring, quite an impressive feat considering that Raess has only started two games this season.
By outshooting William Woods 16-3 and obtaining a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks, the Bears have shown that they aren’t afraid to relentlessly attack the goal, which will undoubtedly help the squad as it enters the season’s home stretch.
In addition to the fireworks on the offensive end, the Bears also posted their ninth shutout of the season, improving the squad’s overall season record to 10-2-3. Already sitting pretty at 16th in the national rankings, the Bears can expect their solid performance against William Woods to boost them a few spots upwards.
The Bears, currently tied for second in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings, will have almost a full week off before hosting the University of Rochester (7-5-2) on Friday. With the UAA’s other top three teams also in action on the same day, a win against Rochester could help the Bears gain some separation in the standings.
After taking on Rochester, the Bears will have two more conference games remaining on their schedule against cellar-dwellers Case Western Reserve University and first-place University of Chicago. Case Western boasts a 9-5-1 record on the season, but sits second to last in the UAA with a dismal 1-3 in-conference mark.
Chicago, on the other hand, could be the team’s toughest test of the season. Boasting an undefeated 13-0-2 record, the second-ranked Maroons will push the rising Bears to the limit. But if the team can finish off scoring chances like they did against William Woods, Chicago could be in for a rude awakening.
