Men split matches, beat Principia 4-0
Bernell DorroughWith a chance to regain some momentum in a mediocre 2-2 season, the Washington University men’s soccer team split a pair of weekend matches to keep their record at .500.
In the initial match on Sept. 12 at Principia College in Elsah, Ill., the Bears dominated the Panthers in all aspects en route to a 4-0 shutout victory. The defense stifled Principia, allowing only five shots all day. Goaltender Colin Robinson only had to make one save to secure the Bears’ third shutout this season.
Meanwhile, the offense finally came through on its numerous opportunities. The Bears have averaged 15 shots per game, yet just two goals per match. With 18 shots against the Panthers, the offense came out firing.
Steve Bujarski started the scoring in the second half, assisted by Austin Barsophy, and then scored again less than one minute later, this time assisted by Rob Weeks. The two goals came on Bujarski’s only two shots of the game.
Twenty minutes later, Scott Frey found the back of the net with help from Paul Dyer, who was credited with an assist. Just when Panthers goaltender Chris Kotila thought the carnage was over, the Bears scored again, this time on a Jake Garfinkle penalty kick. The kick came as a result of a yellow card issued to Principia’s Mike Vernon.
In an interesting trend, every Bears’ triumph has come by way of the shutout; however, all of the squad’s defeats have also come in the same fashion. This pattern continued against powerful Wheaton College, the No. 19 team in Division III. The Bears headed into the match eyeing a two-game winning streak; they left the pitch with a 1-0 loss.
The Bears’ offense was totally shutdown by the Thunder, managing just seven shots to Wheaton’s ten. Still, the two teams played a scoreless first half. In the second half, however, Isaac Heath tallied the first goal of the game, and Thunder goaltender Pat King made it hold up. Heath finished with four saves.
The Bears once again allowed their two goalies to split time between the posts. Colin Robinson played the majority of the match, allowing one goal and saving three attempts in 55 minutes. Jeremy Kaplan-Lyman played 35 minutes, garnering one save.
