Offensive woes continue
file photoDespite a performance laden with offensive opportunities, the Washington University men’s soccer team failed to finish against Rhodes College on Sept. 7. Thanks to a Chase Mathis goal, the Lynx shutout the Bears 1-0.
The loss drops the Bears to 2-2 on the season. On Sept. 5, the squad defeated the University of the South 1-0 to commence the Rhodes College Invitational. In that match goaltender Jeremy Kaplan-Lyman and his defense turned in a spectacular performance. Kaplan-Lyman faced only four shots on goal, and he saved all four for the shutout.
Still, the Bears’ offense couldn’t find the back of the net until James Ward scored on a penalty kick at the 93 minute mark. The overtime victory came largely due to a big 15-7 advantage in shots.
The shots kept coming against Rhodes, as the Bears out-shot the opposition 15-5. Only one Lynx shot was on net, and that was the game-winner at the 49 minute mark. Meanwhile, Rhodes goalkeeper Jonathan Nelson stopped all five shots he faced to nab the shutout.
The Bears take their .500 record to Elsah, IL on Sept. 12 to face Principia College. They return to Francis Field Sept. 13 to take on Wheaton College.
