GW’s in Sports
In honor of the birthday of our nation’s first president, we’ve compiled a list of five influential Georges in sports and five influential Washingtons in sports.
Georges:

George Steinbrenner—The controversial owner of the Yankees since 1973, Steinbrenner is known for firing managers (17) and winning championships (6).
George Brett—1999 Hall of Famer, Brett spent his career with the Kansas City Royals. Brett has a .305 career batting average, 317 home runs, 1595 RBIs and .487 slugging percentage.

Washingtons:
Kermit Washington—Washington was the last player to average 20 points and 20 rebounds per game in college when he graduated from American University in 1973. He went on to play for 8 1/2 seasons with Kareem’s Lakers.
Ted Washington—One of the NFL’s premier run-stoppers, the ten-year veteran nose tackle currently makes his home in Chicago with his 330 pound frame helping to anchor the Bear defense.
Malivai Washington—The first African-American male since Arthur Ashe to reach the finals at Wimbledon, Washington garnered four singles titles in his career.
Coquese Washington—Washington is ranked 4th in the WNBA in steals per game with 2.16 and ninth in assists with 3.8. She’s a guard for the Houston Comets during the WNBA season and a coach for Notre Dame during the college season.
Denzel Washington—Ok, so he’s not an athlete, but he plays one in the movies. We included him on the list for his portrayal of Rueben “the Hurricane” Carter and a football coach in Remember the Titans.
