Women’s soccer notebook
Playing for pride and respect, the Washington University women’s soccer team bounced back from a 2-1 defeat at Rochester on Friday for a big road conference triumph at Brandeis on Sunday.
After an excellent 5-1-2 start, the team had fallen into a marked slump with a record of 0-5-1 in their last six games. Turmoil surrounding the status of Head Coach Doug Hippler created an aura of instability around the program. In fact, the last time the women had won was on Saturday, September 29th. In WU’s losing skid the offense had been virtually non-existent in being outscored 12-3 by their opponents.
However, Sophomore Brenda Harpole and company were determined to stop the skid on Sunday in Massachusetts. In a game that was a defensive struggle all the way, Harpole, assisted by Jessica Glick, scored the only goal leading the Bears to a 1-0 victory.
Sure, it wasn’t an offensive display, but the women did manage to scrape out a victory in a close game. Interestingly, this marked only the first WU victory this year where the women won by a single goal; usually they blow out their opponents in victory. Nevertheless, the victory gives the Bears a much-needed confidence boost heading into their next two games against Illinois Wesleyan University and University of Chicago
