As good as the omelets and waffles taste, are you getting a bit tired of Center Court on the weekends? Are you looking for someplace special to go for breakfast when people come to visit or do you just need a little pick-me-up after a long week of studying (or partying)?
Well, City Coffee House and Crˆperie may be the solution to your problems. It offers a delicious breakfast/brunch and may just help to brighten a bad day (or week for that matter).
The Crˆperie was bustling on a Sunday morning. The line nearly ran out the door and the seats were filled inside and out. A beautiful, colorful menu was displayed on a large chalkboard on the wall. My friend and I perused the menu, placed our orders, paid, were given a number and were told to sit where we pleased (which meant wherever we could find an open table). Though the atmosphere appeared hectic at first, we had no problem placing our orders and finding a table for two.
The restaurant’s dark cream-painted walls were adorned with French paintings, which added to the European feel of the restaurant. As we waited for our food, our ears filled with the constant chatter and the clatter of silverware.
Though the cute café offers all sorts of soups, salads, sandwiches, quiche, waffles and fresh bakery items, its specialties are certainly coffee and crˆpes. The crˆpe options are the most extensive and can be made with white flour or buckwheat flour. Options span a wide range of ingredients and influences, from French-style combinations of meats, cheeses and fruits to Mexican-influenced crˆpes filled with onions and chilies.
If you want to feed off of a more local inspiration try the Shaw Park, which consists of turkey, fresh spinach, havarti cheese, roasted red peppers and homemade dressing.
The restaurant also offers a variety of dessert crˆpes, which can be filled with sugar, honey, jam, fruit, chocolate or other special combinations-the Freedom crˆpe, for example, is filled with strawberries, blueberries and crŠme fraiche. The Crˆperie even has a PB&J crˆpe
Though it was difficult to decide, my friend and I opted to try the Nutella Crepe with Strawberries, the Quiche du Jour and the Clayton Club Crˆpe. The only negative thing is that my friend and I had to wait for our food a little longer than we would’ve liked. However, considering the fact that the restaurant was packed with patrons, the slightly slow service didn’t really come as a surprise.
The chocolate crˆpe was to die for-almost sinfully good. Dusted with powdered sugar, it was bursting with strawberries and Nutella (a creamy, chocolaty, hazelnut spread). The crˆpe was the perfect consistency-chewy and not too thin to fall apart, but also not as thick as a pancake.
The Quiche du Jour was beautifully presented. It was served with a slice of baguette and a small salad of fresh spinach, red grapes, strawberries and sliced green apples. The quiche was hot and homemade, filled with egg, ham and cheese.
The Clayton Club Crˆpe was filled with turkey, bacon, fresh spinach, marinated tomatoes, green onions, Swiss cheese and homemade dressing. The homemade dressing tasted of fresh herbs, which complimented the flavors of the meats and cheeses.
To accompany the delicious foods, the Crˆperie offers a variety of drinks like coffee, espresso, tea, Italian Soda, hot apple cider, hot chocolate, Orangina, Naked Smoothies and Nantucket Nectars.
My friend and I were down and stressed out when we entered the restaurant. On the way out, she noted that the restaurant had put her in a good mood.
So if you need a pick-me-up, check out the City Coffee House and Crˆperie and start your week right. Get there soon to try the fall season specials: Pumpkin Waffles, Pumpkin Pie Crˆpes and Caramel Apple Crˆpes.
