Most people even from North Carolina don’t know where Lincolnton is-where is it?

‘It’s 40 minutes northwest of Charlotte in an area they call the foothills. It’s not quite the mountains, but at least it’s some sort of interesting geographical feature.”

Do you actually live in Lincolnton?

“No, we live in the county. My dad doesn’t like paying city taxes.”

When you say “city,” you mean…?

“14,000 people.”

What is Lincolnton known for?

“I think something about the first cotton gin. I know that doesn’t speak well for why the state is well-known.”

Where would you take a visitor to Lincolnton?

(no response)

Sorry, better question, are there visitors to Lincolnton?

“Yeah, I guess if someone is passing through.”

What kinds of food are distinctive about Lincolnton?

“Sweet tea and barbeques. Sweet tea is more than just extra sugar and there’s nothing like a BBQ. We have them at holidays, festivals, religious events…”

Religious events?

‘Sure, any kind of church fundraisers. People love to put on a display.”

How big is NASCAR in Lincolnton?

“Everyone loves NASCAR.”

Who is the favorite driver?

“Clearly, there are a lot of factions within the sport, but the late, great Dale Earnhardt is huge because he’s from the area. He’s to North Carolina what Michael Jordan is to the rest of the country.”

Um, isn’t Jordan from North Carolina?

“Oh yeah. Well, ok. But Earnhardt, he’s their boy.”

Who do people in Lincolnton root for in sports?

“High school sports are everything. People also support UNC. Duke is too elitist.”

What about Lincolnton are you most happy to get away from when you come to school?

“Intolerant people who are closed-minded. People who don’t accept those with different views on politics, race, religion.”

What about Lincolnton do you miss when you come to school?

“I know it’s a clich‚, but just how friendly people are back home.”

Wait, so you people are closed-minded and friendly at the same time?

“Well, they are friendly; they just assume everyone holds their views. Maybe they wouldn’t be so open if they knew I didn’t agree with them.”
