Libraries to require ID card for access at night

As of spring break, students will need to use their University ID cards when accessing Olin Library and Whispers Café after 9 p.m.

According to an announcement by the University, the change is set to take place on March 16, the day on which most students will return from the break.

In the past, the library was open to all until midnight, after which a similar card access policy would take effect.

According to Shirley Baker, dean of the Washington University Libraries, the change is being made in order to make the Olin Library card access schedule consistent with other buildings on campus.

“Our students, faculty members, and staff already make it a habit to carry their University ID cards, so this schedule change should be an easy adjustment,” said Baker in a press release. “We also believe it will enhance student safety without greatly restricting the larger community’s access to Olin Library.”

There will be no change in the hours of operation for either the library or Whisper’s.
