Revenge of Dr. Funkenstein

So the other night at the Cascada concert, Team 31 announced that George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars will be headlining W.I.L.D. this spring. Personally, I couldn’t be happier. Not only can they definitely manage more than four songs (wagging finger of shame, Cascada) but funk is the perfect music for an event like Walk In Lie Down. Basically, the funkier the music is and the more funked up you are, the better the overall experience will be. You can dance, sing along to the repetitive lyrics or just chill; once Clinton drops his bomb of pure, uncut P-funk this campus will never be the same.

So why write about it at all, if the advantages of a revolution and evolution of funkiness are all so obvious? Because the reaction so far, from the students I’ve talked to at least, has been luke-warm at best. Many replied to the anouncement that they were unsure of who Clinton was or why they should be so excited about this guy. Ignorance of the funk is no excuse! Have you never listened to one of the thousands of rap songs that sampled George Clinton? Have you never seen “PCU”? Just because you don’t know the music intimately doesn’t mean it isn’t the perfect choice for Spring W.I.L.D. And just to make this clear, everyone at Wash. U. is very aware of George Clinton’s work. Basically take any funk song you’ve ever heard and it probably had George Clinton or a member of his band directly involved. The guy is a freaking legend, and, moreover, one who is still extremely cool, not like Sly Stone who has seemed to put most of his prodigious talent up his nose. Clinton has not only still puts on a great show, but allows audio taping at most of his concerts. I mean the guy encourages personal bootlegs. How sweet is that?

So all you grumpy Funkelstiltskins, recognize that while some of you may have been jonesing for a Plain White T’s concert, George Clinton and P-Funk will serve your needs beyond words. Check out his ridiculous website if you still aren’t convinced.
