Umrath to be torn down; Busch to be renovated
Capital projects undertaken in the next academic year will include the demolition of Umrath House and the renovation of Busch Hall, according to administrators at the tuition forum on Tuesday night.
At the forum, administrators outlined the ways in which tuition dollars will be used and the breakdown of the budget for the upcoming fiscal year [for more on the forum, see Student Life tomorrow].
Dean Edward Macias of the College of Arts and Sciences announced that Busch Hall would be renovated in response to a question about the continued construction on campus.
According to Macias, the renovations would be in the same vein as those that occurred in Wilson Hall-and would be representative of the future plans for Arts and Sciences buildings that call for renovating older buildings in place of erecting new ones.
Also at the forum, Justin Caroll, dean of students, confirmed that pending the approval of the City of Clayton, the next phase of construction will begin on the South 40 this summer with the demolition of Umrath House. The construction will take one school year.
According to Rob Wild, assistant to the chancellor, the opening of Village East, a new complex of apartments currently under construction, will relieve some of the housing burden from the South 40.
The Village East apartments will have suites of four students, each with a single, a common living space, bathroom and a kitchen, similar to the Millbrook Apartments.
Other summer construction plans include the first phase of construction on the renovation of Wohl Center, beginning with construction adjacent to Shepley Drive and the relocation of the cooling unit for many of the buildings on the South 40.
