Vertigo to feature new electronic dance floor

A computer-controlled dance floor will be the main feature at the EnCouncil’s Vertigo dance party tomorrow.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) started the project after students saw pictures of a dance floor created at the Massachusetts Institute of Techology last spring.

Sophomore Pehr Hovey, the president of IEEE, is chairing the dance as well as the dance floor project.

“We saw the floor made at MIT on a feature online and it looked really awesome, so we decided to do it ourselves,” said Hovey. “It’s similar to the MIT floor in that we’re using their hardware, but the one big difference is that ours is portable and comes apart into four pieces. The floor at MIT was built into a dorm.”

Hovey explained the intricate details of the floor construction.

“Red, green, and blue light emitting diodes (LEDs) that are [each] about the size of a pencil eraser are in each square of the floor. We have several computer chips that turn the red, blue, and green lights on and off such that they can combine to make any color,” said Hovey.

The floor contains 1,536 of these LEDs and they light up to display 4,096 different colors.

“The entire floor is 8 by 16 feet, and it will be in the center of the dance floor as a centerpiece. There will be a big DJ lighting system to feature it, and it will be raised off the ground.”

The floor construction has been the number one priority in the schedules of many engineering students for the past few months.

“We’ve been working on the floor since July, but in the last month we’ve put in over 1,000 hours,” said Hovey.

The dance will be held this Saturday from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. in Lopata Hall and is open to everyone.
