MTV to invade campus before WILD

This month’s WILD, combined with mtvU’s “Campus Invasion 2005″ tour several days beforehand, will create the first “Wash U Gone WILD” week.

On Tuesday, April 26, mtvU’s “Campus Invasion 2005″ will take over the Washington University campus for a day of entertainment and activities, culminating in a concert that evening at the Pageant that will feature the English rock groups Muse and Razorlight.

The Gargoyle Committee, as part of the Social Programming Board (SPB), is behind bringing Campus Invasion to the University. A booking agency informed the Gargoyle Committee that Campus Invasion was searching for a St. Louis tour date, and the group quickly jumped at the opportunity to bring Muse to campus. SPB, a Student Union umbrella organization for Campus Programming Committee, Team 31, Filmboard and the Gargoyle, will sponsor the event.

Although SPB members are excited about hosting the event, they expressed initial concerns that it could potentially overshadow WILD, which will take place three days later and include activities similar to those of Campus Invasion. As a solution, SPB decided to integrate the mtvU event into a “Wash U Gone WILD” week, which will begin with Campus Invasion next Tuesday and end on Friday with WILD. Smaller events, such as a recess-themed lunch in Bowles Plaza and a special Happy Hour with live music, will take place on Wednesday and Thursday. This is the first time such a week will occur on campus.

“It should be an exciting time,” said junior Pamela Bookbinder, vice president of Student Union and chair of the SPB.

The 20-date Campus Invasion tour, headlined by Muse, kicked off April 8 at Florida Atlantic University and will make its way across the country. It will reach Washington University the day after television coverage of its events begins.

Junior Eric Garza, president of the Gargoyle Committee, helped bring the event to campus. He expects the big names and big events to draw a large crowd.

“We always try to jump on a good show that we know will bring in a big crowd,” said Garza. “[Muse] put on a great show at Mississippi Nights last April, and they nearly filled the Pageant in November.”

Campus Invasion’s daytime events will occur from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. in Bowles Plaza. MtvU will be setting up an interactive “village” for students to visit, where they will be able to participate in activities ranging from physical challenges and video game competitions to makeovers and t-shirt designing. Prizes will be given away throughout the day by sponsors such as Ford, Wrigley’s Big Red, Nintendo, Clairol’s Herbal Essences, Butterfinger Crisp, and Sobe. MtvU cameras will be on hand to interview students and give TV viewers a taste of life at the University. VIP tickets to that night’s concert will also be given away.

Doors for the show at the Pageant will open at 7 p.m. and the music will start at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the Edison Theatre Box Office and are $5 for Washington University students and $15 for the general public. Buses will be provided to take students from campus to the Pageant for the show.

The yearly tour is organized by mtvU, MTV’s 24-hour college network. Dedicated to bringing music and news to campuses across the country, it is the most comprehensive television network for college students, broadcast on over 700 campuses and seen by over 6 million students nationwide.
