Smilowitz mocked for third straight year

Ben Smilowitz was expecting an uneventful Tuesday morning when he arrived to the Hilltop campus on April 1. However, the senior was surprised to learn that the editors of Student Libel had mocked him for a third straight year.
“Wow, you guys must have some sort of morbid fascination with me,” said Smilowitz. “I’m a little surprised, but it’s nice that you guys thought of me.”
Student Libel editors first mocked Smilowitz in 2001, when the venerable publication included a parody of that year’s Student Union election, in which the political activist ran. Last year, Libel ran a front-page story on the Washington University “Axis of Evil,” which included Smilowitz, along with balloonist Steve Fossett and the Bunny.
Libel editors were quick to point out that this trend does not reflect any personal vendettas against the prominent political figure.
“Back in 2001, we weren’t really making fun of Ben, so much as mocking the entire SU election. Last year, we picked him at the last minute,” said Libel editor Bernell Dorrough. “We just thought it would be fun to keep the tradition alive one more year. He’s been a great sport through all of this.”
Though Smilowitz and Dorrough are expected to even grow closer because of this year’s parody, other students at the university were left confused and bitter.
“What the hell?” asked SU Treasurer Jonathan Frick. “He gets mocked for three straight years, and I don’t get made fun of once? That’s crap, and you know it, Bernie.”
