SL Elects Editors in Chief
Brian HammanBill Bulman and Taylor Upchurch have been selected to be the 2000-2001 co-editors in chief of Student Life.
Bulman and Upchurch, both juniors, will take full control of the paper on April 2. Bulman will primarily oversee the news and opinion departments of Student Life, while Upchurch will direct sports and Cadenza. This is the first time that two editors in chief have run Student Life in several years.
“The co-editorship should work especially well in that the combination of Bill’s and my experience covers almost the entire editorial side of the paper,” said Upchurch.
Bulman began his career on Student Life as a reporter freshman year. He then served as the Friday news editor his sophomore year and currently holds the position of opinion editor. He is specifically in charge of running the editorial board and writing staff editorials.
Upchurch started as a sports reporter and contributing writer to Cadenza his freshman year. He was then promoted to a sports editor his sophomore year and continued to contribute to Cadenza. Upchurch currently holds the positions of music editor for Cadenza and associate editor for Student Life, where his responsibilities include reporter recruitment and training, and editing sports.
Bulman and Upchurch hope to take advantage of their combined 6 years of collegiate journalism experience, 41 years of age, and nearly 14-foot in order to push a more active newspaper.
“Next year, Student Life is going to become an active, as opposed to a passive, entity. Right now, essentially, things happen and we cover them-whether in news articles or on the opinion page,” said Bulman. “We are going to boost the leadership side of the paper so that we can arrange special coverage of crucial university issues that aren’t necessarily connected to individual events.”
In addition, both agreed (as they `always’ do) that they plan to make diversity one of Student Life’s top priorities.
“Our goal for next year is to diversify both the staff and the subjects we cover on and off campus,” said Upchurch. “A number of potentially interesting stories fly under the radar each week, and we want to cut down on that number.”
Bulman is particularly interested in diversifying the opinion pages.
“We don’t want the content in Student Life to be a loud representation of one viewpoint,” he said. “We want everyone screaming and debating on its pages, and we want a number of ideological perspectives to combine in making it an effective forum.”
The editors in chief are selected by majority vote of the Washington University Student Media Inc., the publisher of Student Life, based on the recommendation of the staff. The editors in chief hire the editorial staff, oversee the entire production of the newspaper and make all final editorial decisions.
Student Life is staffed by Washington University undergraduates and is editorially and financially independent from WU.
Applications for editorial positions are currently available at the Student Life offices, located in the basement of the Women’s Building.
