SCF funding

The future of club sports on this campus looks grim to say the least. With the completely unexpected non-renewal of the Sports Club Federation’s block funding, I can safely say that all 23 sport clubs are in for some hard times. My question, though, is WHY didn’t block funding for SCF pass? The student activity fee is a fixed amount, of $269; SCF was only asking for a direct allocation, a vote of confidence of sorts, from the student body for 3.6 percent, $9.75. The increase in the amount we asked for (from $8.75 to $9.75) is nowhere near the amount of growth we’ve had in the past two years, instead we’ve continually increased the amount we internally fundraised, up to the current 72 percent as was noted in our ballot statement.
With all the publicity about the Campus Y e-mail war, perhaps people thought you could only vote for either Campus Y or SCF, but in reality, they were completely independent, we have the highest regard for Campus Y and wish them the best of luck; yet we, like they, are an organization that needs to be able to form our budgets on a multi-year basis. How can a team plan for tournaments, or for going to nationals, if they don’t even know if they’ll have enough money for it? The whole point of block funding is to allow groups to know, year after year, how much money they’ll have. This reduces the amount of headache on the part of the teams and for the SU office itself. As the current SCF Secretary, I can only say I’m sorry we didn’t gather your support, but more importantly, I want to apologize to over 400 people in the sport clubs who now have a very uncertain future. What will happen to us, I don’t know, but hopefully we will all be able to continue competing and representing WU to the best of our abilities. For those of you who voted no to SCF, I encourage you to let me know why you did so, and what we could have done to convince you that block funding is a necessary part of SCF’s existence.
For those of you who don’t know, here is a list of all the clubs currently in the Sports Club Federation: Badminton, Crew, Cycling, Fencing, Field Hockey, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse (Men’s and Women’s), Roller Hockey, Rugby, Sailing, Soccer (Men’s and Women’s), Table Tennis, Tae Kwon Do, Ultimate Frisbee (Men’s and Women’s), Volleyball (Men’s and Women’s), and Water Polo (Men’s and Women’s).
