Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

Thank you for all your encouragement of Wash. U. athletics. Monday night’s game was certainly a big game for the Bears soccer program, and Red Alert would like to thank Student Life and Bears Sports supporters for their advertisement of the event. Unfortunately, Red Alert, as an organization, chose not to promote the Wheaton game as a traditional “Pack the Place” event, for a number of reasons.

Red Alert is a student-run organization dedicated to fostering school spirit and generally does so by promoting key athletic competitions. We are a small group of students and would come out to every event if we could, but it is not feasible with our current staff and resource limitations. With that said, the organization must consider both the contest itself and the student body’s availability when deciding to promote events. While the Wheaton game specifically was a great contest to promote, it also unfortunately fell on a Monday night. Furthermore, this was not simply any Monday night, but the Monday night following Fall Break, when many students would typically catch up from the weekend, if they weren’t taking one of several calculus exams administered that night or attending one of the events as seen on the front page of Monday’s Student Life.

Red Alert did send out an e-mail to several thousand Red Alert members on Sunday afternoon to raise awareness of the women’s soccer match against Wheaton on Monday. Instead of overly promoting this event, though, we decided to focus on the Friday night game, against UAA rival University of Rochester. When this decision was made, Rochester was favored to win the UAA Conference, to the dismay of the Bears. In fact, one of the athletes on the team specifically requested that Red Alert promote their game against Rochester because that game could easily determine the winner of the conference, which determines who gets an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.

Go Bears!
