Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor:
Within minutes of the news of the massacre at Virginia Tech, left-wing pundits were quick to point to their ultimate solution : gun control.
Why would increasing the laws on gun control do anything but help future criminals? Did the United States learn anything from the Prohibition? Imagine if just one of the students or teachers involved in the shootings had a concealed weapon. Would we be dealing with a massacre? No, of course not. We would have a botched attempt at a mass murder.
Cho Seung-Hui was a 23 year-old legal U.S. resident with no criminal record other than a moving violation. He was also a psychopath, and many people missed the signs that all pointed down this path. But should we make it illegal to buy a handgun if another person comes from the same background? No, because he would be sure to obtain a weapon somehow illegally. This was a depressed individual who should have undergone counseling, as is proof with his demented plays and writings. There are just as many people who are lonely and looking for attention in the same situation, but they don’t turn to murder. The solution to this problem is better education.
I would feel infinitely more safe on campus if concealed weapons were allowed. Making it harder for law-abiding citizens to buy guns is not a solution, as it will only exacerbate the problem. Criminals and those sick enough to do something this horrible will find a way to get weapons, regardless of gun control laws. In a perfect world, guns should be banned, but that cannot ever happen, as then only the criminals would have them. There is no quick fix to this solution, but there is a lesson to be learned from this. We all know those quiet people in class who never seem to have any friends. Why not take a minute out of your day and make sure they know that someone out there cares? This man, as demented as he was, was just looking for an answer, where none could be found.
