“The Good Person of Szechwan”
Performing Arts DepartmentPlaywright Bertolt Brecht once said in an interview, “I’m not writing for the scum who want to have the cockles of their hearts warmed.” So, if you’re looking for a touching theatrical experience this weekend, then “The Good Person of Szechwan,” may not be your weekend activity of choice. But, if you are looking to experience “epic theatre” at its finest, then this streamlined version of Brecht’s original, just may be worth taking a look at. Featuring many “Brechtian” techniques, including actors that speak directly to the audience, disjointed musical numbers and visible scene changes, this work plays to the audience’s intellect more than their emotions. But as Director William Whitaker explained, “[Brecht] may have wanted intellect over passion, but he often delivers both. It is his genius.”
“The Good Person of Szechwan” will be performed in Edison Theatre April 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 8 pm and April 18 and 25 at 2 pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Edison Theatre Box Office or at the door.
