Student Life Archives (2001-2008)

One for my homies: Movies

We have arrived at Cadenza’s final issue as a separate newspaper, and it will be sad to see my blessed movie section be incorporated into Student Life next semester. Hopefully, though, this new situation will increase readership and let more students know about all the film opportunities around campus and town. St. Louis gets plenty of smaller independent films and foreign movies, particularly at the Landmark Tivoli in the Loop, and fall 2003 should bring films on par with “Spirited Away,” “Blind Spot: Hitler’s Secretary,” and “Russian Ark.” The movie scene here on campus isn’t too shabby, either, as the annual French Film Series reveals.

As for summer movie advice, if you’re a comic book nerd, this is your year, since “X-Men 2,” “The Hulk,” and “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” will debut in May, June, and July, respectively. “The Matrix: Reloaded” opens May 16, promising more special effects, more martial arts action, and more utterances of “whoa” from my man Keanu.

Meanwhile, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” opens in July, with Ah-nuld reprising his role as the progressively more wrinkled cyborg. For those who couldn’t get enough of Elle Woods and her dog Bruiser the first time around, “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde” sees the Harvard law grad travelling to the nation’s capital. Hilarity, hijinks, and hair products ensue!

I hope you have enjoyed this semester’s movie section. Or, if you think it sucks, why don’t you do something about it and come write worthy reviews for us? Writers get passes to movies and nifty press kits. And believe it or not, movie promotional companies are sometimes nice enough to fly you out to L.A. and put you up at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, just so you can tear some crappy movie to pieces! As for our regular “Rental Picks” section, its fate remains unknown, but if anyone has good ideas for themes, again, feel free to contribute. Frankly, I’m burned out on the whole process. Other than that, the movie section will no doubt strive in its new environment in Student Life, and you can expect reviews and movie features at least once a week. Until then, have a good summer. In the words of Abraham Lincoln, by way of “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”: “Be excellent to each other. And…party on, dudes!”
