Jurassic 5 and Black Eyed Peas: old school hip-hop at its best
“We be falling up, never falling down / keep it at a higher level, elevated ground / when we’re in your area, city, or your town, Black Eyed Peas is known for getting down.”
- Black Eyed Peas, “Falling Down”
“You say you want action satisfaction/ The brothers with the positive reaction / The crew with style that’s on top of the pile/ J5′s gonna rock a long long while”
- Jurassic 5, “Action Satisfaction”
Jurassic 5 and Black Eyed Peas practice what they preach. And their gospel is an old-school hip hop party, bumping with the beats and scratching of a flesh and blood DJ, and the raps of live emcees. Maybe Team 31 could have gotten more famous, or more trendy acts, but they couldn’t have gotten two groups that put on a hotter show, or are closer to the spirit of true hip-hop. We all got juiced up for this show six months ago, and the wait will only have made it better.
Live rap has its defaults, namely that almost no-one sounds as good in person as on the CD, but the Black Eyed Peas add a little something to their live show that doesn’t come with the album: jaw-dropping breakdancing. In fact, the Peas are almost as well known-through their gravity-free video for “Joints and Jams” and their live show-for their dancing as for their rapping, and if the audience on Saturday is lucky, the Peas will show their skills.
The Jurassic 5 are older and less limber than the Peas, but they have strength in numbers. Actually numbering six, including their two DJs Cut Chemist and DJ NuMark, the J5 put on a show that bursts with energy, and the four rappers trading rhymes on stage creates an atmosphere of excitement and spontaneity.
According to Team 31′s schedule, we’ve been promised an hour from each of Black Eyed Peas and Jurassic 5, which sounds like a dream come true. Each band has about an hour’s worth of great songs, and their sets combined will provide twice the entertainment of the Roots’ excellent but skimpy set in Fall 2000. Jurassic 5 also happens to have a new album due out in a few weeks, and we might get a sneak peak at their new stuff-which, judging by the fact that they’ve improved with each successive release, will probably be excellent. In short, as long as the weather holds up (and opinions are divided on the issue), Wash U can expect the best WILD in recent memory.
