Editor’s Desk

Once again, it’s the end of the year here at Cadenza. As you read this, the final issue of Cadenza for the school year, it seems like the year started so recently. Who knew in such a short time we’d put out twenty something issues. Even more dramatic, we suffered through the shocking loss of color so early in the year. Just weeks before we were going to put out our tie-dye issue too! Fortunately, it’s really not that long till Cadenza will resume production. Just think, it’s a only four short months till the next issue. Not so long after all, is it?

This is a special issue of Cadenza, not only because it’s the final issue of this year, but also because it’s the first issue without former editor Emily Fredrix. Ruling with an iron fist, Fredrix dominated the Cadenza offices for years, leaving behind a wake of destruction every week. Mercifully, Wash U. has finally graduated her. As she moves on to what those in the know refer to as “the big show” in journalism. That’s right, the St. Louis office of the Associated Press (whoo hoo), Cadenza will finally have a chance to rediscover itself. No longer will you have to read about bullshit like people who sell newspapers on the corner, or about the Whitemore house being haunted (what?). Freed of the cocoon of sappy, overdramatic journalism, Cadenza will finally be able to turn into that proverbial butterfly, and spread its wings (metaphorically speaking, of course) and fly (further extension of metaphor).

Readers should expect to see big things (as well as new freshman girls!) when fall finally roles around again. Thoughtful, exisitential poetry, friendly intellectual banter, at the occasional heart warming (and tummy filling) recipe from home will finally be the norm, and not the exception. And don’t forget the occasional pop-up issue!

Even more exciting, Cadenza will return both to color and the tabloid format. Budgets and wary advertisers be damned, we’re keeping it real. Is it really real son? By God yes, this time it really is really real. Expect to see Cadenza printed on the finest stark white, seventy pound paper from Mohawk Paper Mills, with a full color, foil stamper cover, printed on heavier stock. Each issue will be numbered and signed, ensuring authenticity. Finally, reading Cadenza will be as much of a sensual experience as an intellectual one. Take off those latex gloves, when you get out of chem. lab, because you’ll want to feel our high quality binding seduce your hand, practically making love to those little squiggly lines that make up your fingerprint.

So turn in your application to write for Cadenza, because salarys are going up, up, up. The excitement will continue as seven lucky Cadenza writers will be sent to Geneva next October to participate in the Annual International Conference of Largely Ignored and Often Irrelevant Art and Entertainment Companions to Also Less Than Impressive Newspapers for Medium Sized Universities (AICLIOIAECALTNMSU). All expenses paid!

So Emily Fredrix, it’s been nice knowing you. But not as nice as it will be seeing you leave. And Peter, that goes double for you!

P.S. Just kidding.

P.S.S. Mitch Hedberg will be at the Gargoyle Thursday night. Check it out if you can, but if not I believe he’s got a website.. Either www.mitchhedberg.com or www.mitchhedberg.net. One of the two.
