The Aquila Shakespeare Company Storms WU

As the clinging remains of spring break’s idleness are so cruelly stripped away, Edison Theatre’s OVATIONS! series has the perfect cultural cure to get students back into the world of academia: battlefields and a crazy monster island. This weekend, the touring British-American Aquila Theatre Company will be performing two separate plays on two separate nights-The Wrath of Achilles and The Tempest.
The Wrath of Achilles is a resetting of Homer’s The Iliad, on the battlefields of World War II. This production focuses on the 16-19th books of the epic poem, portraying the Greeks in the role of the Allies, and their near defeat at the hands of the Trojans/Axis powers. In the story, the temperamental warrior Achilles is the pivotal character as a man who lets pride blind him, leading to a comrade’s death and Achilles’ mad grief and vengeance. The Tempest is a completely different story-Shakespeare’s tale of an island utopia imperiled by aggression from both without and within. The sorcerer Prospero and his daughter’s adventures on an island manage to cover topics ranging from true love to deadly greed, with everything in between.
In 1991, the Aquila Theatre Company was founded in London by artistic director Peter Meineck. The company has achieved the honor of becoming the Company-in-Residence at the Center for Ancient Studies at New York University.
Worldwide touring as taken the Aquila Theatre Company throughout Europe, The United States and Canada, and they have performed for such distinguished institutions as the British Museum, the McNay Art Museum and the Folger Shakespeare Library. So take a break from your frantic (or not so frantic) catching up this weekend for two soothing evening of redesigned classics.
