Music Review: Maxwell

A good album will make you nod your head, think softly and tread hard. A great album will do all that AND give you goosebumps with every repeat. Maxwell’s new album, entitled “Now”, does all that-but then, of course, it’s Maxwell.
Do we give him too much credit? Maybe. Maxwell himself called his album a test of evolution and says his “ideas of love have matured.”
Mature they did; while the album retains the smooth, sultry and precious style that has become associated with one of the sexiest men in the music industry, the lyrics and rhythms have deepened. “Lifetime”, the radio release, is not Maxwell’s usual sample of sappy (but enduring) love, but a picture of growth and endurance through adversity. “Get to Know Ya” starts the album off with a finger popping, charming beat while “Symptom Unknown” evokes the desperate sensuality that only Maxwell can get away with. And, of course, no Maxwell album would be complete without a song dedicated to love and lovemaking (you know what I mean!), this one deliberately titled “For Lovers Only.”
At some points, Maxwell’s melody’s become dangerously reminiscent of previous hits (“Symptom Unknown” parallels to “Submerge” off the Embrya album), but he gets away with it. Why? Because he’s Maxwell.
Bruthas, don’t be haters, there is something on this album for everyone. Sistas, Maxwell throws down, and that new mix of “This Woman’s Work” makes the fifteen bucks you spend SO worthwhile. So buy it, enjoy it. We, at Cadenza, approve of it.
