Stop contaminating the outdoor recycling bins

Friday, October 29, 2004 ||

Have you noticed the outdoor recycling bins on campus this semester? If so, have you made an effort to utilize them? In late spring 2004, the Committee on Environmental Quality, through a grant from the Student Union, purchased and installed twenty-five recycling bins to be placed outdoors on campus.

Picking up the shattered pieces of my career

Friday, October 29, 2004 ||

Much to my personal amusement, Ashlee Simpson was caught lip-synching during her “live” performance on “Saturday Night Live” last weekend. For those of you without pop-tart fetishes, such as myself, I’ll take a moment to explain what happened. Simpson had performed her hit single “Pieces of Me” as the first song of the evening and taken a break.

Letters to the Editor

John Kerry is Catholic? Dear Editor: I have to laugh every time I see an article lauding Senator John Kerry for keeping his religious beliefs separate from his politics. Diego Chojkier’s letter ["Kerry keeps faith out of politics," Oct. 27, 2004] was the most recent.

McCaskill for governor

Friday, October 29, 2004 ||

From a Washington University student’s perspective, Democrat Claire McCaskill is the best choice for Missouri governor. Not only has she demonstrated more concern for students than her opponent, Republican Matt Blunt, but her record and vision are far more amenable to student interests.

U2: They’re back, again

Friday, October 29, 2004 ||

“God,” my friend proclaims, our eyes affixed on the umpteenth commercial break of these incredible playoffs. “U2 needs to not be doing, like, wannabe-Hives garage rock. U2 needs guitars with tons of reverb, and anthems. Fucking Bono-just because you talk to people in Africa about AIDS doesn’t mean you’re hardcore.

Ted Leo can’t stop shakin’

Friday, October 29, 2004 ||

Ted Leo’s an energetic guy. Between relentless touring, the man’s managed to record some of the great guitar-rock albums of the last few years: 2001′s “The Tyranny of Distance” and 2002′s “Hearts of Oak” stand as testaments to Leo’s boundless energy and his consummate ability to transcend pop, punk and literate lyricism and deliver pure rock ‘n’ roll.

Scary seconds: Songs that truly terrify

Friday, October 29, 2004 ||

It’s the spookiest time of the year again, which means people are hauling out the horror flicks, ghost stories, and Michael Myers masks. But what music are you gonna play at that Halloween party? The “Ghostbusters” song? The theme to “Halloween”? “The Monster Mash”? One sees a problem emerging: there is no truly “scary” music out there.

You got the right one, baby!

Friday, October 29, 2004 ||

For people of our generation, our first image of the late Ray Charles was probably that of a good-natured old man in wraparound shades shilling Pepsi, exclaiming “You got the right one, baby!” By that time, Charles was already a permanent fixture of pop music, long since inducted into the pantheon of great muscians.
